THE FLUTE QUARTET BACK TO LIFE

Brussels Muzieque

Music / Sun 20th Nov / 8 PM

Immerse yourself in a revived performance of the once acclaimed flute quartet ensemble, in this original concert by Brussels Muzieque.

The flute quartet setting - comprising a flute, violin, viola and cello - reached the pinnacle of success in the second half of the 18th century, to the extent that it even rivalled the popularity of the string quartet at that time. Its success brought many famous composers including Mozart, Haydn and Bach to explore this instrumentation; however, as from the 19th century, the flute quartet completely lost its popularity to the string quartet once again and virtually no compositions were written for it until the 20th century.

The beauty of combining flute and strings should not be forgotten, therefore Brussels Muzieque has assembled an accomplished team of musicians to bring the uniqueness of the flute quartet back to life, and back to you.

Aldo Baerten (principal flutist in the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra), Jacqueline Preys (Principal 2nd violins at the Belgian National Orchestra), Monika Mlynarczyk (co-principal viola La Monnaie/De Munt), and David Poskin (laureate at the David Popper Cello Competition) will revive the music for flute quartet by performing works from its high days by Haydn and J. C. Bach and by presenting some more recent work from the 20th century for flute and strings by Van Gilse and Roussel.
