Brussels Muzieque

Music / Sun 20th Nov / 8 PM

Immerse yourself in a revived performance of the once acclaimed flute quartet ensemble, in this original concert by Brussels Muzieque.

The flute quartet setting - comprising a flute, violin, viola and cello - reached the pinnacle of success in the second half of the 18th century, to the extent that it even rivalled the popularity of the string quartet at that time. Its success brought many famous composers including Mozart, Haydn and Bach to explore this instrumentation; however, as from the 19th century, the flute quartet completely lost its popularity to the string quartet once again and virtually no compositions were written for it until the 20th century.

The beauty of combining flute and strings should not be forgotten, therefore Brussels Muzieque has assembled an accomplished team of musicians to bring the uniqueness of the flute quartet back to life, and back to you.

Aldo Baerten (principal flutist in the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra), Jacqueline Preys (Principal 2nd violins at the Belgian National Orchestra), Monika Mlynarczyk (co-principal viola La Monnaie/De Munt), and David Poskin (laureate at the David Popper Cello Competition) will revive the music for flute quartet by performing works from its high days by Haydn and J. C. Bach and by presenting some more recent work from the 20th century for flute and strings by Van Gilse and Roussel.

ALDO BAERTEN, Belgian flutist, is Principal Flutist at the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and Professor for Flute at the Royal Conservatoire in Antwerp, at the Hogeschool der Kunsten Utrecht (NL), and at Hochschule für Musik und Theater Köln/Aachen. He is a regular guest at the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, I Fiamminghi, European Union Opera, Arctic Philharmonic, Swedish Chamber Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Aldo Baerten has played as a soloist with eminent orchestras in Europe and America, and has recorded extensively on Cypres, Phaedra, ECM, Pentatone and PMP and Principal Chairs.

JACQUELINE PREYS, Bulgarian violinist, is Principal Section Leader of the 2nd violins in the Belgian National Orchestra. She is a laureate of the 3rd Prize at the Vienna Stefanie Hohl Violin Competition, the Young Emerging Star Award Duo piano/violin at International Chamber Music Competition, Plovdiv, and received a National Award for High Musical Achievements in 2007 from the Minister of Culture in Bulgaria. Jacqueline has performed as a soloist and taken part in numerous festivals and special occasions.

MONIKA MŁYNARCZYKPolish violist, is currently co-principal viola in the orchestra of the Brussels opera house La Monnaie/De Munt. She has played with orchestras in Belgium, Italy and Luxembourg and has taken part in several festivals as a chamber musician.

DAVID POSKIN, Belgian cellist, won the first prize in the International Young Virtuosi Pipkov Competition in Sofia 2015, 3rd prize at the International David Popper Cello Competition in Budapest 2015, the special prize at an international competition in Malta 2015, the Concours Edmond Baert (junior category) 2007 and the UFAM competition Paris 2005. He has performed as soloist with orchestras across Belgium.

Brussels Muzieque appears with the support of the Federation Wallonie-Bruxelles.
