How climate migration will reshape our world

A salon with Gaia Vince

 Ideas Festival  / Sat 2 Dec / 6-7.30pm

In her ground-breaking book Nomad Century: How To Survive The Climate Upheaval, Gaia Vince is setting the agenda for national conversation on one of the most pressing issues of our time. In it, she explores for the first time the idea of migration as a solution to our climate crisis - the ultimate adaptation - and how the relocation of hundreds of millions of people in the 21st century could, if managed well, allow us to adapt habitats and create global economic wealth.

The climate crisis already has millions of people on the move, and that number will steadily grow higher till it breaks the political structures of the planet – unless, as Vince suggests, we start now to remake those structures so they can cope, and indeed benefit, from the flow of humans that is now inevitable.

Gaia Vince is a science writer and broadcaster exploring the interplay between human systems and the planetary environment. She is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the Anthropocene Institute at UCL and a regular host of BBC Inside Science. Her first book, Adventures In The Anthropocene won the Royal Society Science Book of the Year Prize. Her latest book, Nomad Century: How To Survive The Climate Upheaval, explores global migration and planetary restoration in a radical call to arms.

Nomad Century (2022), Transcendence (2020), Adventures in the Anthropocene (2015).
