White Europe

Talk with Hans Kundnani

Catalyst  / Fri 22nd Sept / 5:15 - 6:15 pm

Have you ever thought about what it means to be European? What do you see when you think of Europe? Do you see people of all ethnicities?

In his book Eurowhiteness: Culture, Empire and Race in the European Project, Hans Kundnani challenges the narrative upon which the EU was built. The European project was promoted around ideals of diversity and justice, but is it reflected in today's Europe? In how we handle migrantion crises? Does being European mean being white?

Hans explores how European identity became intrinsically linked to whiteness, and how we can confront this.

Hans Kundnani is an associate fellow and former Europe programme director at Chatham House, and the author of Utopia or Auschwitz; The Paradox of German Power; and Eurowhiteness, all published by Hurst. Hans writes regularly for The Observer, The Guardian, The New Statesman and Foreign Affairs, among others.
