We know that Britain’s uneasy relationship with the European Union has a long history. But let’s take a pause amidst Brexit anxieties, ahead of June’s referendum on British membership of the EU, and consider a basic question, tout court: why can’t the British understand the EU?


ABOUT

Jonathan Steinberg is the Walter H. Annenberg Professor Emeritus of Modern European History at the University of Pennsylvania and former Chair of the Department of History. His teaching covers modern Europe since 1789 with specialization in the German and Austrian Empires, Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and modern Jewish history. Most recently he authored the impressive biography ‘Bismark: A Life’, which Henry Kissinger praised as the best study of the subject in the English language.
