"...a small but powerful book, compounding merciless political critique and allegory rendered in tender prose." - The Guardian
A young refugee washes up unconscious on the beach of a small island inhabited by no one but Samuel, an old lighthouse keeper. Unsettled, Samuel is soon swept up in memories of his former life on the mainland: a life that saw his country suffer, then fight for independence, only to fall to a cruel dictator; he recalls his own part in its history.
South African author Karen Jennings has created a compact, powerful fable that exposes several of the modern world's greatest crises. Longlisted for the 2021 Booker Prize, it’s a welcome surprise on a longlist which favoured established authors.
Come discuss this powerful novel at our first Book Club of the year.
