Making Sense of the Middle East

Hugh Pope has over thirty years's experience of reporting for British and US news agencies and newspapers, combined with a mastery of Arabic, Persian and Turkish; He's better equipped than most to ponder how we can understand politics and society across the Middle East.

His book, Dining with Al-Qaeda, Making Sense of the Middle East was first published in 2010 and revised and republished in September 2020.  Seeing Middle Eastern politics, society and culture through his expert eyes and with the benefit of his in-depth knowledge of the region and its people he'll be discussing the role of information in conflict and how understanding context is one of the preconditions for peace.  Hugh will be in conversation with Brussels-based communications expert, Asdis Olafsdottir - and of course, all of us.

Hugh Pope

An acclaimed former foreign correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, Pope has lived and worked in two dozen countries throughout the region.The book which is the launch pad for our discussion this evening was first published in 2010 and revised and updated in September 2020. 

Ásdís Ólafsdóttir

International Crisis Groups's online communications manager since 2017, Ásdís worked previously for the Icelandic National Committee of UN Women, as communications officer for the EFTA Surveillance Authority and as personal assistant to a presidential candidate in Iceland. She began her career in media, both television and radio.
