JULES EVANS
PHILOSOPHY FOR LIFE

Evening Salon / Thurs 14 Mar / 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Most of us probably give little thought to Greek philosophy in our everyday lives. Jules Evans wants to change that by demonstrating just how useful the ideas of the Greeks can be in helping us overcome adversity in our professional and personal lives. Inspired by his own experience of philosophy helping him through a life crisis, he developed ‘Philosophy for Life’, a model of wellbeing education that balances evidence-based techniques with ethical discussion, approaching questions of the meaning of life in a pluralistic way. From times of emotional stress to the new ‘politics of wellbeing’, he explains how to bring philosophy into our everyday lives, in the hope we might all get closer to the good life.

Jules Evans will also give a talk to teenagers, see our TeenTalk with Jules Evans.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Jules Evans is a British writer, philosopher, broadcaster and Policy Director at the Queen Mary Centre for the History of Emotions in London. His research examines how Ancient Greek philosophy can contribute to a better understanding of our mental health and wellbeing. He is involved in the Modern Stoicism project and the RSA’s Spirituality project, as well as helping to run the London Philosophy Club - an initiative with over 10,000 members. His regular contributions to publications as varied as the Financial Times, The Times, the Guardian and The Spectator have ensured the wide reach of his ideas beyond the academic sphere. His commitment to widening public engagement with scholarship was reflected in his being named a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Thinker.
