WE ALL HAVE A BLACK FRIEND

          A salon with François Gemenne

          Wed 24 Nov / Ideas / 6:00 - 8:00PM

Migration is a hot subject. One that François Gemenne dedicates his career to researching and understanding in all its intricacies and taboos. Public discussion is often polarised around borders issues, quotas, police violence, the veil, discrimination and mostly fears. Can we do any better?

In his latest book, On A Tous Un Ami Noir, François deconstructs received ideas on migration, and debates why Western societies - France in particular - look so suspicious and tense on this subject. Himself a foreigner, living in France for over twelve years, he does away with ideologies and brings in calming new reflections and facts that are all too often absent from debates. He shows that it is possible to think about migration in a rational and peaceful way. Join us to find out more.

            CHINA, FROM FOOD TO POLITICS

            A salon with Roel Sterckx

            Thurs 17 Feb / Ideas / 6:30 - 8:30PM

Roel Sterckx shows us that to understand China today we must learn to think Chinese.

Never before has Chinese culture been so physically, digitally, economically or aesthetically present in everyday Western life. But how much do we really know about its origins and key beliefs? How did the ancient Chinese think about the world?

Sterckx looks at China's world of ideas and examines questions of leadership, social order, death, nature, and more. He reveals how these ideas shape contemporary China, from table manners at a traditional banquet, to the Chinese obsession with education and family, to the rhetoric of political leaders and the nation's grand strategy. The ancient Chinese have shaped the thinking of a civilization that is now influencing our own.

He has held previous posts at National Taiwan University, Wolfson College Oxford, and University of Arizona. DO NOT DISTURB

              A salon with Michela Wrong

              Thu 17 Mar / Ideas / 6:30 - 8:30PM

One of the sharpest observers of African politics, Michela Wrong joins us to discuss her latest controversial work. Do Not Disturb is already contributing to a rethink about the nature of the regime in Rwanda as it puts uncomfortable questions about the country's track record into the public domain.

With her powerful investigation into a gruesome political murder and the authoritarian regime behind it, Michela upends the narrative that Rwanda sold the world after one of the deadliest genocides of the twentieth century.
